An acid within a skincare formula is a topical ingredient that has a pH level of below 7.
There are many different acids used in skincare such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), but polyhydroxy acids (PHAs), azelaic acid and hyaluronic acid. As our skin is naturally slightly acidic (with a pH level of about 5.5), topical application of acids can help stimulate the skin to produce the elements it needs to remain healthy. The benefits of acids are wide ranging and include hydration (e.g. hyaluronic acid), exfoliation (e.g. glycolic acid) and brightening (e.g. tranexamic acid), as well as combating acne, wrinkles, dehydration and uneven skin tone.
