Ectoin is an amino acid derivative and is known as an extremolyte, one of a group of compounds derived that protects plants and microorganisms from extreme conditions (such as deserts and the deep ocean).
Ectoin can help to form a seal over the skin, protecting it against transepidermal water loss and reducing cellular damage from environmental aggressors such as UV exposure and pollution. Ectoin may also help improve the skin barrier and reduce inflammation.
